Click here to learn more how to buy this "Starburst Wax" Starburst Wax - Dip a solid colored candle into starburst wax which has been brought up to 137 - 140° F, and just moments from removal watch the snowflakes/starbursts appear! The wax is opaque; a thin layer will give the solid colored candle a pastel look. When a darkly colored candle is dipped into this wax it imparts a charming "starburst" or snowflake like effect on the surface of the candle. This is a very tricky wax and is not recommended for a beginning candle maker. You should practice and experiment with this wax before you attempt to use it on any finished product. Prepare the candles you wish to apply this effect to. They must have a wick about 6" long for you to hold on to while you dip them. They should be clean and dry, no dust or fingerprints, otherwise the over-dip will not adhere to the candle. Some scented candles may not work well with this wax, especially if essential oils are used. Have a place ready to hang the candle by the wick while the over-dip cures. Use a double boiler method to melt this wax. It works most efficiently on an industrial level in a large capacity vat, but you can still use it at home on your stovetop. IMPORTANT! Oddly, this wax only generates the effect at about 137-140° F. Even a couple of degrees too high or too low, and the effect will be diminished or not happen at all. Do not use any additives, dyes, or scents in this wax. It must be used straight or the effect will not happen. The melt point of this wax is 136 degrees, the effect only happens at 137-140° F degrees, so you have to be very careful to maintain the proper temperature. First, take the wax to 190 degrees to make sure that it gets melted as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Then allow it to cool down to 137-140° F degrees. Place a thermometer into the water and adjust the heat so that the water stays at a constant 137-140° F degrees. Watch for a skin to form on the surface of the melted wax. This means that the wax is reaching its melt/solidify point. The wax beneath the surface will be getting close to the proper temperature. Use a few darkly colored taper candles to test the wax. Dip a taper into the wax and steadily pull it out; it should only be submerged for about 1 second. If the temperature is correct the starbursts will appear right away, you will be able to see them cover the candle within just a few seconds. If the starburst happens sparsely and slowly the temperature is not right, wait a few moments and try again with another taper. When the effect is working, you may only be able to get a few production candles dipped before the wax gets too cold for the effect to work. Make sure that you skim away the surface skin in the melting pot before you dip your production candle. With some practice and good note taking you should be able to reach and maintain the right temperature until you do not have enough wax in the pot to dip with anymore, and must start over by melting more wax. ).
